See that justice is done. Defend widows and orphans and help those in need.  Isaiah 1:17

What is Be A HERO?
Be A HERO is an international charity working to raise up an Army of Heroes for an urgent global crisis – endangered children. We believe that everyone has a dream of doing something significant with his or her life. We connect everyday, ordinary people with opportunities to change the world, in small ways, and in large ways - one child at a time.

Be A HERO is a not-for-profit organisation with a mandate to educate, inspire, equip and facilitate people of all ages to “Be A HERO” to the 1.2 billion children at risk due to poverty, homelessness, child labour, slavery, sexual exploitation, aids and plagues, war and religious persecution.

Who Can Be A HERO?
We want to enlist everyone to the mission of mercy and social justice – caring for children suffering as a result of poverty, child labour, slavery, homelessness, sexual exploitation, aids and plagues, and war.

As Mother Theresa said, "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

Be A HERO representatives worldwide present the plight of children at risk to hundreds of audiences, large and small, every year, supported by our offices in Canada, USA, Australia, and the Philippines.

Be A HERO provides compassionate people with step-by-step directions on

  • how to gather those in their sphere of influence and, together,
  • do something life-saving and life-transforming! Today, many ‘heroes’ all around the world are making a significant difference in the lives of those in crisis by a myriad of positive contributions.  Be A Hero will re-ignite the latent desire within every human being to "Be a Hero" in the lives of those who are less fortunate, and create a continuing movement of volunteerism on behalf of those who are dear to the heart of God - the poorest of the poor

Talk It Up

Talk to your manager or business owner about presenting (or having someone present) the Be A HERO message to your work mates and/or a gift matching program to help your company or organisation achieve its “triple bottom line” and raise its corporate citizen profile.

Corporate Wear

Start talking about where your  uniforms are purchased and consider buying from the HERO Shop

Fundraising and Fair Trade in the Staff Room

Consider selling cups of tea/coffee or drinks from your fridge (Fair Trade of course).

Our workplace has a Nespresso where staff can make their own yummy coffee for a fraction of the price of the coffee shop and sponsor a child at the same time!

With these funds you can sponsor a child, join the HERO Army, become a HERO Partner.

HERO Event

Consider running a HERO Event for your next work party or social day.  You could organise your own event or join other events and nominate Be A HERO as your charity of choice.

Contact us for more information on presenting the Be A HERO message at your work place.

Child Sponsorship More Info

on Tuesday, 19 June 2012. Posted in How to Be A HERO, Sponsor A Child, US, Canada, Australia

What Does Sponsorship Pay For?

For sponsored children, the knowledge that someone on the other side of the world also cares for them gives them a lift in spirit that could make the difference in their lives. Examples of what sponsorship pays for are:-

  • In Bangladesh - contributes to Global Concern/Every Home for Christ schooling, a hot meal every day for students and teachers, study material and some medical help for children living in slum conditions. A portion of the funds will be used to provide opportunities for parents and other adults in the community to have vocational training in sewing classes, and rickshaw businesses as well as learning about health, hygiene and family planning.
  • In Cambodia - supports a child rescued from exploitation and now safe in the SHE Rescue Home which means a future, a hope and an opportunity for her to see dreams reached and her family restored
  • In Kenya - supports children living and schooling at Heroes of the Nation - education, housing, carers, meals, sports, music

Can I Write to Sponsored Children?

Be A Hero has a process in place in which any emails and mail sent to the children is checked to ensure that it does not detrimentally affect the children there. As you can imagine, these children have next to nothing, so any information about our lifestyle, needs to be filtered carefully to protect the children, including details of holidays and living conditions. Once you commit to sponsorship we provide tips for communicating with the children.

It takes some time to receive a reply as most of the children do not speak English well, so often the letters have to be interpreted to them and their letters have to be translated into English.

Be A Hero asks that sponsor parents do not send any additional money for the sponsored child’s personal use. If you have any questions in this regard or would like to contribute to the children in another capacity, please contact us.

From time to time information is received about the child and this is also forwarded on to the person sponsoring the child.

AusAID Guidelines

Under the Australian Government's AusAID guidelines, child sponsorship must support the whole field partner's development program – which of course includes every child in their care. Australia-wide, tax deductible sponsorship programs cannot send funds directly to an individual child under the Australian government's legislation.

Change this:

Nobel prizewinner, Gabriella Mistral, put it this way: “We are guilty of many errors and and many faults, but our worst is abandoning the children, neglecting the fountain of life. Many of the things we need can wait. The child cannot. Right now is the time his bones are being formed, his blood is being made, and his senses are being developed. To him we cannot answer, ‘Tomorrow’. His name is ‘Today’.

Two levels of sponsorship:

Partial Sponsorship – contributes towards the cost of food, housing, and clothing for a child, for $33.00 per month (or $396.00 for a year) This includes a $3.00/month handling fee.

Full Sponsorship – contributes towards the cost of food, housing, clothing, schooling and medical care for a child, for $63.00 per month (or $756.00 for a year) This includes a $3.00/month handling fee.

After we receive your payment, you will  receive a photograph, a short biography, and instructions on how to communicate with your sponsored child.

Payment options include:

Monthly, quarterly, half yearly or yearly payments by:-

  • pre-authorized debit or by Visa or MasterCard
  • direct from your bank account
  • cheque
  • cash

Be A HERO Values

on Monday, 18 June 2012. Posted in FAQ, About Us, US, Canada, Australia, The Philippines

sponsorchild

Be A HERO’s inspiration and values are built upon the Christian belief of the one true God and His Hero Son, Jesus Christ.  Based on the testament of the Bible we believe that all human life has value, and that the two highest moral imperatives are:-

1) to love God; and

2) to love your neighbour as yourself, as taught by Jesus in His famous illustration of the good Samaritan.
(Luke 10:25-37).

Ethical Shopping for Tea, Coffee, Chocolate, Clothing, More - Shop Care-fully

on Monday, 18 June 2012. Posted in HERO Shop, Ethical Shopping, Speak Up, How to Be A HERO, US, Canada, Australia, Slave Labour & Exploitation

Often children are used in the production of the tea, coffee, chocolate and other items we use daily and give to our own children (like easter eggs).  Other industries (like clothing) use slave labour and exploitation to bring us cheap merchandise.

Rainforest-AllianceThe FAIRTRADE Mark and Rainforest Alliance are an independent consumer labels which appears on products as a guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.

More and more businesses are producing their products ethically.  Check the labels of your purchases and see where you can Be A HERO with your purchases every day.

FairtradeInterestingly, these products cost a little more than other products, but someone else has a fair income and working conditions and their children get to go to school instead of working in farms that produce tea, coffee and chocolate for our indulgence!

Download the Stop the Traffik Good Egg Guide and take it shopping with you! Ask the supermarket assistant or manager to show you where their Traffik-Free Easter products are. Tell them you are supporting farmers who are engaging in good labour practices and contributing the STOP THE TRAFFIK of children in the chocolate industry.
