Ethical Shopping

Be-A-HERO-HERO-Shop1

We can use our money to bring good to children and their families with how we spend. We need to ensure that our needs and wants do not harm children in any way.

Would we buy a product (eg. chocolate, coffee) if we knew that the purchase that particular product/brand is enslaving the life of another child – someone else’s daughter – would we still buy it?

More and more businesses are producing their products ethically.  Check the labels of your purchases and see where you can Be A HERO with your purchases every day.

Buy Fair Trade and ethically made products for your home, workplace, church or school.  Tea, coffee, chocolate (among other things) are now available through major supermarkets, OxFam, TEAR and Salvation Army stores.

Be A HERO now has ethically produced "made to order" garments available through the HERO Shop.

Ethical Shopping for Tea, Coffee, Chocolate, Clothing, More - Shop Care-fully

on Monday, 18 June 2012. Posted in HERO Shop, Ethical Shopping, Speak Up, How to Be A HERO, US, Canada, Australia, Slave Labour & Exploitation

Often children are used in the production of the tea, coffee, chocolate and other items we use daily and give to our own children (like easter eggs).  Other industries (like clothing) use slave labour and exploitation to bring us cheap merchandise.

Rainforest-AllianceThe FAIRTRADE Mark and Rainforest Alliance are an independent consumer labels which appears on products as a guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.

More and more businesses are producing their products ethically.  Check the labels of your purchases and see where you can Be A HERO with your purchases every day.

FairtradeInterestingly, these products cost a little more than other products, but someone else has a fair income and working conditions and their children get to go to school instead of working in farms that produce tea, coffee and chocolate for our indulgence!

Download the Stop the Traffik Good Egg Guide and take it shopping with you! Ask the supermarket assistant or manager to show you where their Traffik-Free Easter products are. Tell them you are supporting farmers who are engaging in good labour practices and contributing the STOP THE TRAFFIK of children in the chocolate industry.

Fundraising and Fair Trade in the Staff Room

Consider selling cups of tea/coffee or drinks from your fridge (Fair Trade of course).

Our workplace has a Nespresso where staff can make their own yummy coffee for a fraction of the price of the coffee shop and sponsor a child at the same time!

With these funds you can sponsor a child, join the HERO Army, become a HERO Partner.

HERO Event

Consider running a HERO Event for your next work party or social day.  You could organise your own event or join other events and nominate Be A HERO as your charity of choice.

HERO ARMY NEWS - September 2015

Welcome to HERO Army news for September, this month we have 3 topics for you to get involved in...

Labelling in Australia – Vote with your Dollars

Within the last decade the number of labels appearing on products available to Australian consumers, be they food or furnishings, has increased markedly. fairtradelogosbeahero (2).jpg

As a result, many people now find themselves confused as to what all these new markers mean and how they relate to the production of the item(s) they wish to purchase.

In order to resolve this confusion, this month's newsletter will address the topic of labels; their purpose and their impact.

You will have seen many of these symbols before. Think of the Save the Dolphins label, the Rainforest Alliance label and even the Fair Trade label. Many however may be new, and/or you may never have really paid attention to these markers before.

The purposes of these labels are many:

  • labels help Australian consumers to differentiate between products that have been made in an environmentally friendly/human rights respecting manner from those that are not
  • labels differentiate products that are energy efficient from those that are non-energy efficient
  • labels differentiate products that minimise waste from those that do not minimise waste

It should never be forgotten that buying and supporting products that feature labels places pressure on many powerful corporations to improve their practices.

It should never be forgotten that buying and supporting products that feature labels places pressure on many powerful corporations to improve their practices.

To know more about the most common labels visit our web page dedicated to lables.

We will also continue this discussion via social media. Specifically, we will examine some of the most important labels used within the Australian market, what they symbolise exactly and where products featuring these labels can be purchased.atriskshirtbeahero2.jpg

Knowledge is Key for a Bright Future

FROM CAMBODIA

placeholder150.jpgThese kids are hungry for knowledge and so happy that they have a chance to study in a ‘class’. They know that this is their chance to have a bright future!

Two village outreach projects for children are out in the back blocks of the province. One ‘class’ takes place under a big old tree and at a second location the ‘class’ takes place under a house. White boards are replaced with flip charts and chairs replaced with tarps.

The children travel along the wet pot holed roads, slipping and sliding in the mud and rain, as they excitedly make their way to their ‘classrooms’ much earlier than they need to.

Mums’ and Dads’ sit around the boundary of the class and the joy on their faces can’t be hidden.

Many of these parents would not have had an opportunity like this and have no doubt struggled through their lives as a result of illiteracy. The teachers are passionate about imparting their knowledge to the children, so class time is special for all involved.

Women’s Lives are Changed

FROM BANGLIDESH

placeholder150.jpgUnskilled women are given an opportunity for self-development in the communities where Be A HERO project partner, Global Concern is educating children .

In India and Bangladesh sewing classes ares part of the community development program training village women in the tailoring skills they need for employment. Many are able to find work in garment factories, earning an income for the first time in their lives.

The Indian women who formed a “self-help” group are so grateful for the opportunity to own their own sewing machines so they can sew clothes at home and earn a living.

All these women's self-esteem has improved as they are able to help provide for the daily needs of their families.

placeholder150.jpgA one off donation of $170 will provide a  sewing machine to help one woman fight her  way out of poverty.

Ongoing support of just $33 a month to support a child also provides training for these women.

Be A HERO - Share your heart for others

placeholder150.jpgAnyone with a voice, computer or a pen can be an advocate.

Just start talking to those around you about the issues of today: poverty, AIDS, child labourers, orphans, street children, child soldiers, sexual exploitation, slavery, unsafe water, children not in school, maternal death rate, refugees, night commuting children, human rights, justice – pick one that you are passionate about, study it, and SPEAK UP!

Join the Be A HERO Facebook and share it out to your friends and asscoiates.
