This region has a HIV/AIDS population of over 210,000 with an infection rate of over 12%. Nairobi has a HIV/AIDS population of over 175,000 with an infection rate of over 16%. [2] There are over 730,000 AIDS orphans in Kenya resulting from the HIV/AIDS crisis.  According to the U.S.Census Bureau/UNAIDS.  UNICEF estimates, the number of Kenyan orphans due to AIDS will increase to 1.5 million by 2010. (2)  Kenya has been able to demonstrate a clear tend of decreasing HIV prevalence over the past several years. During the past three years, critical HIV services have been scale up. As a result, general awareness and knowledge for HIV transmission are nearly universal.

Hope Academy provides education to over 580 impoverished children in a rented facility.  Be A HERO has partnered with Hope for the Nations to complete construction of their new, 15 classroom facility that will eventually facilitate education for 1000 children. Another vital component to this Hope Village is Mercy House, which cares for severely malnourished children, feeding and providing medical care until the children regain their health and can return home.

Recurring drought, flooding during rainy seasons with 5 inch plus thick mud that regularly closes roads and makes it virtually impossible to move around, water pollution from urban waste such as sewerage and industrial wastes; degradation of water quality from increased use of pesticides and fertilizers; water hyacinth infestation in Lake Victoria; deforestation; soil erosion; desertification; poaching, just a few of the challenges the Kenyans face each day of their life. To face having to drink water that you can visibly see disease floating in is an everyday reality, a bottle of water is a luxury they can not imagine.

Be A HERO partnered with Smile Africa to ship a 40’ container to Ghana, containing over 40,000 books, 50 computers, barrels of dehydrated soup mix, and some medical supplies. These goods were distributed to 10 communities to assist them in setting up Public Libraries.

Be A HERO supplied and installed computers for the children to learn computer skills.  The 38 children who currently live at Joyville now have an opportunity to learn skills that will take them into a future with HOPE and EQUALITY.

Joyville are also planning to run a vocational training program for the surrounding community.

With the growing number of street children and children at risk in the Philippines, there is a need for the provision of alternative safe accommodation.

This program is to benefit the community through education and awareness, among other things. Heroes of the Nation has obtained a radio and TV license and building of the station house commenced in July 2008.

HOTN has seen the economic changes in Kenya due to advances in communication through the internet and the many jobs available to people with word processing and computer skills.  HOTN has been assessing the needs of both the students and the local community over the past two years and has seen the need for an I.T. based learning program for some time.

The medical clinic will be open to the surrounding community as well as the school’s residents.  The clinic will be available 24/7 with on-call staff.

HOTN has received donated medical equipment and supplies from hospitals and medical facilities, with commitments for future shipments.  The government has also committed to pay for one doctor and one nurse to work part-time at the proposed medical clinic.  Once the clinic is operational, we hope to have the assistance of doctors and nurses that visit as part of our “Hero Holiday” program.

In 2006, $27,000 dollars was raised in Australia to purchase a further 4 acres of land to build a sewerage treatment plant and water storage facility that will serve the future growth of Heroes of the Nation for up to 1000 children.

Heroes of the Nation have also used the extra property to grow much needed crops and to build facilities for the dairy cows program.

The youngest and the most vulnerable of the children in Nyahururu, like in many places, are the girls.  The completion of accommodation for 80 of the youngest girls as our second major construction project was extremely satisfying.
The girls were so excited at having their own beds after living 2 and 3 to a bed previously.

January 21, 2006 was a very joyous day at Heroes of the Nation as the older boys moved into their new dormitory. Those moving over from the old site used the donkey and our Land Cruiser to move mattresses and belongings. An atmosphere of celebration prevailed, with much laughing and fun.

Completion of this new dormitory allowed Heroes of the Nation to take in more orphaned children. On Monday morning the new children arrived. It was precious to see the boys greet and welcome the new orphans – they know what it is like to be a newcomer, and so went the extra mile to be warm, helpful and friendly. The “old hands” were eager to show the new boys around, helping them settle into the dorm, and quickly involving them in games and activities.

This children's home provides a home for children at risk. These children may be orphaned or, either unable to live at home, or be supported by their parents. These children's homes are in the form of orphanages, single-family housing, or hospitality centers. The children are provided with housing, education, and health-care. Education and training is culturally relevant and is centered on developing leaders for their societies.

In partnership with Hope for the Nations and Cambodian Hope Organization, Be A HERO has completed Stage 1 of the children’s village in Poipet - a children’s home for 24 at-risk children. The Children’s Village is desperately needed to enable the rescue of children before they fall victims of kidnapping and trafficking.

Safe Haven Children’s Village has six children’s home each for 8 at-risk children and one mother. The Children’s Village was desperately needed to enable the rescue of children before they fall victims of kidnapping and trafficking. Five hectares of land has been purchased to facilitate this project.

Be A HERO Australia renovated two houses which will become a child care centre to serve the community, and also renovate the current dining hall which is adjacent to the houses.  70% of the dining hall will be allocated for kitchen use and the remainder of the building will be used as a toilet block for the child care centre.

A third house is being considered for renovation to use as emergency accommodation.
